Chess for Android is a comprehensive chess application consisting of a powerful chess engine and a user-friendly graphical interface (GUI). This application allows users to input moves using the touch screen, trackball, or keyboard. It also features a helpful "move coach" that highlights valid user moves and the last played engine move. Additionally, users can navigate through full games, correcting mistakes or analyzing their gameplay.

The game's import and export functionality supports the widely-used FEN/PGN formats, allowing users to easily share games via the clipboard or file storage. For more advanced features, users can utilize the position editor to set up specific game positions. The application recognizes various draw conditions, such as stalemate, insufficient material, the fifty-move rule, and threefold repetition.

The chess engine within the application offers different difficulty levels, including a random level and an auto-play mode where the engine plays against itself. This allows users to use the app as a "magnetic chessboard" for practice. Users can play as either side of the game and view the board from the perspective of white or black.

One of the standout features of Chess for Android is its compatibility with popular chess engine protocols such as Universal Chess Interface (UCI), WinBoard, and XBoard. This allows users to play against third-party engines or even organize tournaments between engines. Users can import engines in different formats including Android Open Exchange (OEX), Chessbase compatible format, or directly from their SD card.

Engine setup options are extensive and include time control settings, pondering (thinking while it's not your turn), infinite analysis capability (analyzing positions indefinitely), hash tables for quicker calculations, multi-threading support for faster computations, endgame tablebases (for perfect play in endgame positions), and opening test suites to practice specific openings.

In addition to its offline capabilities, Chess for Android offers connectivity with external electronic chessboards such as Certabo, Chessnut, ChessUp, DGT, and Millennium. It also supports online play on platforms like FICS (Free Internet Chess Server) and ICC (Internet Chess Club).
